Short Biography


Walter Fähndrich

Born 1944. 1965-71 Studies in music theory and viola at Lucerne. Composition of music for radio plays, theaters, ballets. Since 1973 concerts with improvised chamber music and since 1981 also with his own compositions for viola solo. Since 1980 MUSIC FOR SPACES (musical projects and music installations in selected interior and exterior spaces). Composition and production of electroacoustic music. 1985-2010 professorship for improvisation at the University School of Music Basle. Planning and direction of the INTERNATIONALE TAGUNGEN FÜR IMPROVISATION, LUZERN (International Conferences for Improvisation, Lucerne). Lives in Ticino (Switzerland).

Walter Fähndrich

1944  Born in Menzingen (canton of Zug, Switzerland).

1965-1971  Studies in music theory and viola at the Conservatory of Music of Lucerne (Switzerland).

since 1972  Composition of music for radio plays, theaters, ballets.

since 1973  Improvised chamber music concerts. Workshops in live-composition and improvisation.

since 1979  Composition and production of electroacoustic music.

since 1980  MUSIC FOR SPACES: Musical projects and sound installations in selected interior and exterior spaces.

since 1981  International concert activity performing his own viola compositions.

1983-1992  Member of the board of directors of the Institut für Neue Musik (Institute for New Music) in Darmstadt (Germany).

1985-2010  Professorship of improvisation classes at the University School of Music of Basle (Switzerland). Since 2003 foundation and direction of the Master-Studies in improvised chambermusic.

1990-2005  Triennial planning and direction of the INTERNATIONALE TAGUNGEN FÜR IMPROVISATION, LUZERN (International Conferences for Improvisation, Lucerne). Editor of the book series "Improvisation" (published by Amadeus-Verlag).

Lives in Ticino (Switzerland).
